Founded in 2015 by architects Luca Mosconi and Simone Pasquali, the design studio Mopa Architettura draws on a team of professionals who put their experience and expertise at clients’ disposal to carry out every project through all its phases, shaping spaces that are welcoming, refined and sustainable.

The project takes place inside a home that already had a strong character, with its own well-defined identity and several elements in traditionally styled wood, from the window and door frames to the furniture. So the challenge wasn’t to give personality to a neutral space, but to introduce a touch of novelty and colour able to dialogue with that pre-existing character without clashing with it. We wanted the bathroom to have a strong, recognisable voice, capable of turning a utility space into an area with a precise identity, while still remaining in harmony with the rest of the home. That’s why we chose a ceramic material able to work simultaneously on the aesthetic, chromatic and tactile level: the hexagon geometry and the glossy surface that catches and reflects light were, for us, two equally important design levers.

Because Tonalite let us work with two levers that mattered a great deal to us: the hexagonal shape and a broad, saturated colour palette, with a glaze quality and brilliance that are hard to find elsewhere. The hexagon is a module we love because it sets surfaces in motion and escapes the rigidity of an orthogonal layout. The collection gave us the freedom to compose a multicoloured mosaic on the floor, while at the same time having, within the same family and format, solid red for the shower area: consistency of language, but with two opposite expressive outcomes. Finally, the glossy finish was essential for achieving the play of reflections we were after.

The floor is the emotional heart of the bathroom: a mosaic of hexagons in every colour — red, yellow, blue, light blue, orange, black, white — laid out with no rigid pattern, to release vital energy and make the whole space vibrate. It’s a chromatic carpet that lights up the room and sets its rhythm. On the shower walls, by contrast, we chose a monochromatic direction, playing with red: a colour that doesn’t stay isolated but picks up and ties together many details in the bathroom, such as the front of the washbasin unit’s drawer, the tap handles and the sculptural heated towel rail. The contrast is between the playful plurality of the floor and the material compactness of the shower, held together by the same hexagonal format and the same glossy finish. What we’re most satisfied with is the balance achieved between chromatic boldness and respect for the character of the existing home: the glossy hexagon and its solid colours coexist with the traditionally styled wood as if they had always been conceived together, with neither one overpowering the other. The end result is a bathroom that shows how a ceramic material, carefully balanced between the compactness of the red and the liveliness of the mosaic, can bring freshness and identity to a villa defined by more classic elements.
