  • The glossy-matt mix: a design strategy for interior designers and architects

Not just textures, colours and formats. Ceramics are also made of light effects that play with the surface. The mix of shiny and matt finishes is a powerful tool in the arsenal of interior designers and architects. Ceramics offer a unique way to play with light and surface texture, enhancing the aesthetics of any space. The interaction of light on ceramic surfaces contributes greatly to defining their aesthetics.

A matt surface tends to absorb light, bringing out colours and graphic textures strongly. Conversely, a glossy surface, under particular lighting conditions, can overshadow this, in favour of a very special shine that gives the installation vibrancy and dynamism. Mixing two finishes in a creative way can be a very refined aesthetic choice, open to the most varied outcomes.

The possibility of combining two surface finishes adds a further aesthetic parameter to be exploited for decorative purposes, as is the case with the Trapez collection in the San Marino Outlet bathrooms.

Many of our collections allow for different laying solutions, even through mixes between different series that share the same format. Creative flair is combined with the characteristics of spaces to enhance their style.

Let’s discover the two finishes in the Tonalite collections

Here are some of our collections together with practical application examples, simple inspirations to give character to your home or to emphasise the personality of a public space.

Dart, Silk and Satin

Silk offers 11 warm, earthy colours with a glossy finish, 10 of which are also available in a matt version in the Satin collection. Mixing the two finishes within the same colour or in polychromatic poses is therefore spontaneous, as is also the case with the Dart collection. In the latter, of the 8 glossy colours, 7 also include a matt finish.

Trapez Glossy and Trapez Matt

Trapez Glossy and Trapez Matt are twin collections immediately recognisable by the originality of the format. The colours of one are repeated in the other two different surfaces. The format also invites a mix of colours, multiplying the creative possibilities.

Arrow

The lozenge is the stylistic hallmark of the Arrow collection: 7 glossy and 9 matt colours to choose from to create colour or finishing poses.

5×15 collections: colour and expressiveness between glossy and matt finishes

Wabisabi is the collection with which we have introduced the 5×15 format into the catalogue. Its 15 colours also offer a rich sample of delicate and floury shades, here however in a matt finish. Inspired by the characteristics of handmade ceramics, Wabisabi narrates an idea of beauty made unmistakable by its very imperfections. In the subtle movement of the surface and the slight irregularity of the edges, each tile appears unique.

The Shibusa series offers 16 colours: an extensive colour scale centred on pastel, compact and dusty shades, all of which can be combined. The clean, essential lines and matt finish give the tile – which can be used both as a floor and wall tile – a contemporary, minimalist look.

Senren‘s 14 muted and shaded shades boast a glossy surface. Here, the typically handcrafted irregularities are accentuated, a feature that enhances the laid surfaces both visually and tactilely. The overall aesthetics of the collection thus winks at the ceramic tradition, revitalising it with particularly trendy colours such as Ottanio, Fiordaliso and Platino.

With these new combinations, Tonalite continues to offer innovative and versatile solutions for architects and interior designers, allowing them to better express their creativity and enhance the style of the spaces they design.
